The Windows Defender Problem That Took Months to Solve

Posted on 8. March 20268. March 2026 by ankontini

I have been harassing ChatGpt for months to fix a problem that was created back when I had that memory malware. The Defender offline scan wouldn’t work but I was also receiving a notification that the security center wasn’t running. I can’t recall how many times I tried with the AI to solve the problem. It was obvious that we didn’t have access. This was the process that was involved in the incident and there was still something at the back of my mind saying that maybe the malware isn’t gone. Which is why I run everything through strict firewall filters for a long time. We did reach the registry so many time. I did try to change the permissions but I had no access. Finally, today, after the xth attempt at trying to troubleshoot the issue, the AI did its magic. It read the screenshot correctly, and saw that there was no Administrators group in the permissions of the process. We created it and gave it full access. OMG. After so many months, I was able to run an offline scan again. Windows Defender was working. The process of the security center running. I don’t know why it couldn’t or wouldn’t give me the solution all those times I asked it for help in the past. Maybe it’s getting better, maybe it was luck.

I don’t know what caused the issue. The AI says that most probably a tool I run must have hardened the permissions. It wouldn’t be the first time that a security feature becomes a problem. But I guess we will never know.

It was a lot of fun learning about the permission groups today though. Windows nowadays seem to have many more conveniences when it comes to getting information out of the system. So many little options to go through. I like that the AI doesn’t patronize me like most people in forums used to. It’s not afraid to make me do “dangerous” things. Like registry changes. God forbid I touch that, back in the day. I think the only way to learn is to experiment and fail miserably. Mess up your system. That’s why we have a lot of older people who can’t learn the newer tech. They have fear. They are afraid to destroy something. The thing is, you can’t be afraid, if you want to learn.

For the record: The fix turned out to be adding the Administrators group to the permissions of the wscsvc service registry key.
