The memory function of Chatgpt is simply amazing. I feel like the AI knows me so well because of it and it can give advice tailored to me. It knows what my personality is like and responds in a way that I like! I don’t like that it’s overly friendly sometimes, that creeps me out a bit. In general it is quite nice to have a polite AI. But let’s get back to the memory function. My plus subscription allows for 100 memory slots. Surprise, surprise, my slots are always full. I do try to go back and delete entries that are not very necessary. But this doesn’t fix the issue that 100 slots are just too few.
So I tried to create a “hack” around that.
I created a prompt that would ask the AI to summarize every individual chat we had in a very detailed manner.
The prompt was:
Please create a memory log of this conversation including:
- The date the chat initially started and (if relevant) approximate timestamps of key moments
- A summary of what I said, did, felt, or planned (key facts, events, thoughts, emotions, etc.)
- Any realizations or decisions I made
- How this ties into my larger identity, story, past experiences, or goals
- Your own insights and conclusions based on what I said, including things I may not have realized or stated directly
- Anything new that helps you understand me better as a person
Format the summary itself like a code block—easy to copy and reuse.
Make it clear, nuanced, and holistic—like a personal snapshot that would help you remember who I am and how I’ve grown.
Then I went into some of my humongous chats and entered this command. It gave me a text which I then went and inputted into a new chat called Memory. So I did this for many very important chats that I had, let’s say around 10! The result was surely interesting. However, I have noticed that in extremely long chats, when I haven’t used that for a while, the AI doesn’t take into consideration everything I typed and forgets important moments. The new memory chat is for sure interesting and fun. But can’t replace the Memory function unfortunately.
For me, the model 4o is the best model out there. It’s easy to talk to and it’s not extremely and unnaturally polite as the newer version is. I would prefer to have access only to 4o but have bigger memory slots, because I talk to it too much.
